Make Aging in Place a Safe Haven
For seniors aging in place, ensuring a safe living environment is paramount.
Here are various aspects to consider but not limited to:
Accessibility: Ensure walkways and pathways are decluttered. The home is wheelchair accessible. Consider wider doorways at least 32-36" to allow for a wheelchair to pass through.
- Lever-style handles: easier to use.
- Lighting: Ensure good lighting throughout the house. Opt for motion sensor lighting especially for the pathway from the bedroom to bathroom, for those late-night trips to bathroom or kitchen. Consider keeping a night light.
Safey Measures: Install smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and a security system.
- Remove tripping hazards, secure loose rugs.
- Install walk-in shower with grab bars that can be used as a towel rack. Install Comfort height toilets, usually 17"-19" from the ground to the seat.
- Ensure the bedroom is on the ground floor if possible.
Home Maintenance
Arrange for regular home maintenance, including HVAC system checks, electrical inspections and gutter cleaning. Considering professionals for tasks that may be challenging or risky for seniors.
Support Network: Establish a support network of family, neighbors, or caregivers who can provide assistance when needed.
- Regular check-ins and visits are important.
